(Austin, Texas) This week, the House Committee on Appropriations approved the House budget and supplemental budget for the next two years. The approved budget and supplemental budget will now move to the full House of Representatives for consideration and will be heard on the House floor next week.
Republicans in the Texas House have worked diligently over the last few months to produce a fiscally conservative and transparent budget while addressing the critical needs of the state. The House has exercised leadership in crafting this responsible budget that spends $106.8 billion in available revenue. Although there were considerable revenue challenges going into this legislative session, and very significant population and inflation growth, the House biennium budget is $1 billion less than the current budget.
Despite the very real financial cuts, the House budget still makes meaningful investments in Texas’ critical priorities. Our proposal includes nearly $1.5 billion in new money for public education, while also reducing recapture (better known as Robin Hood). We are addressing the foster care crisis in Texas by investing $433 million of additional funds in child protective services. In addition, the House is dedicating $62.6 million in new funds to eliminate waiting lists for community mental health services across the state. The House budget also maintains our historical commitment to border security funding and protects the state’s investment in transportation.
“Republicans in the Texas House have worked together to craft a balanced budget that addresses the critical needs of the state without spending beyond its means. The safety and security of Texans will always be a top priority, and I think the House budget reflects that in a significant way,” said Chairman Tan Parker.
The Texas House Republican Caucus is comprised of all Republican Members serving in the Texas House of Representatives. The purpose of the Caucus is to provide research, education, policy development and other support to the Caucus Members and their staff.
