TEXAS HOUSE PASSES LEGISLATION TO EMPOWER PROPERTY TAXPAYERS

(Austin, Texas) Today, the Texas House of Representatives passed House Bill 32, also known as the Property Tax Payer Empowerment Act of 2017, to increase transparency and reduce confusion around the property tax rate setting and appraisal review process.

This legislation brings transparency to the tax rate setting process, giving taxpayers the tools and information they need, in an easy to understand format, in order to engage local officials who set tax rates. Also, for those taxpayers who take part in the protest process, the bill strengthens their rights by making the process fair, accountable and transparent.

“Without question, Texans across the state are frustrated by rising property tax bills and a confusing process that often leaves them with little recourse,” said Chairman Tan Parker. “With the Property Tax Payer Empowerment Act, House Republicans have maintained their commitment to providing property taxpayers with a voice to advocate for fiscally disciplined tax policy.”
