TEXAS HOUSE PASSES PROPERTY TAXPAYER EMPOWERMENT ACT

(Austin) On Sunday, the Texas House of Representatives approved legislation to increase transparency and clarity for Texans who pay property taxes. The House unanimously passed the Property Taxpayer Empowerment Act as an amendment to Senate Bill 669.

This legislation brings transparency to the tax rate setting process by giving taxpayers the tools and information they need in an easy to understand format in order to engage local officials who set tax rates. Also, for those taxpayers who take part in the protest process, the bill strengthens their rights by making the process fair, accountable, and transparent.

“Taxpayers are frustrated by rising property tax bills, but a lack of transparency and a confusing process often leaves them with little recourse,” said Chairman Tan Parker. “The Property Taxpayer Empowerment Act makes it easier for taxpayers to understand how they can be most effective in advocating for fiscally disciplined tax policy.”
