The Texas House Republican Caucus met this afternoon and nominated Rep. David Cook of Tarrant County to be the Republican Caucus endorsed candidate for speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.
Cook was elected on the third ballot with a super-majority of the 62 members voting. Rep. Cook received 77% of the vote over Rep. Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock).
The vote was part of the caucus procedure in the by-laws stating the election for an endorsed speaker candidate must occur before every session of the Texas Legislature. Both the Caucus by-laws and the Republican Party of Texas call on all members of the Republican Caucus to support the Caucus nominee.
“The process worked as it was intended, to provide every Republican representative the opportunity to have a say in who leads the House as speaker,” said Rep. Tom Oliverson (R-Cypress). “We congratulate David Cook for securing the nomination and look forward to working with him, in his election to the speakership, and to achieve conservative victories in the upcoming legislative session.”
The caucus also elected officers for the 89th legislature. Rep. Tom Oliverson, MD (R-Cypress) was re-elected chairman of the caucus. Rep. Shelby Slawson (R-Stephenville) was elected as vice-chairman, Rep. Dennis Paul (R-Houston) will serve as treasurer and Rep. Ellen Troxclair (R-Lakeway) was named caucus secretary.
Is there a list of those members who joined Dustin Burrows in walking out?
